Diagnosing Diapycnal Mixing from Passive Tracers

چکیده

Abstract Turbulent mixing across density surfaces transforms abyssal ocean waters into lighter and is vital to close the deepest branches of global overturning circulation. Over last 20 years, rates inferred from in situ microstructure profilers tracer release experiments (TREs) have provided valuable insights connection between small-scale large-scale Problematically, estimates based on TREs consistently exceed those collocated measurements. These differences been attributed a low bias that can miss strong, but rare, events. Here we demonstrate TRE suffer high bias, because approximations generally made interpret data. We first derive formulas estimate temporal growth second moment patch by extending Taylor’s celebrated formula account for both stratification variations rates. The are validated with tracers released numerical simulations turbulent flows then used discuss biases interpretation how possibly overcome them.

Numerical Study of the Diapycnal Flow Through a Tidal Front With Passive Tracers

[1] A two-dimensional numerical model is used to study the diapycnal flow through a tidal front with passive tracers. In a basic numerical experiment a passive tracer is released into the bottom water at the offshore edge of a tidal front, and it subsequently moves on-bank with a velocity that decreases with time. This qualitatively agrees with a recent field experiment using a dye tracer on Ge...

Diapycnal Mixing and Internal Waves

Diapycnal mixing is an integral factor in the meridional overturning circulation of the ocean. The slow upwelling in the ocean interior across density surfaces requires counteracting diapycnal diffusion. Diapycnal diffusion in a stably stratified fluid requires mechanical energy and the availability of this energy might well be the controlling factor in setting the strength of the overturning c...

Mixing and diapycnal advection in the ocean

In the stratified ocean, vertical motions arise from both adiabatic and diabatic mechanisms. Diapycnal advection is the vertical component of flow across an isopycnal surface which occurs when mixing produces a divergent flux of buoyancy. Buoyancy forcing of the lateral flow by vortex stretching occurs when diapycnal advection rates vary with depth. Microstructure observations of enhanced turbu...

Diagnosing Lateral Mixing in the Upper Ocean with Virtual Tracers: Spatial and Temporal Resolution Dependence

Several recent studies diagnose lateral stirring and mixing in the upper ocean using altimetry-derived velocity fields to advect ‘‘virtual’’ particles and fields offline. However, the limited spatiotemporal resolution of altimetric maps leads to errors in the inferred diagnostics, because unresolved scales are necessarily imperfectly modeled. The authors examine a range of tracer diagnostics in...

Observations of Enhanced Diapycnal Mixing near the Hawaiian Ridge

Profiles of potential density obtained from CTD casts at two stations at different distances from the Hawaiian ridge are examined for evidence of diapycnal turbulent mixing as indicated by density inversions and internalwave vertical strain. Results from independent casts are used to produce ensemble-averaged vertical distributions for the number of inversions and the Thorpe scale. Both paramet...
